The right of mahr and inheritance is a strong determinant in the quality of women’s lives.
As evidenced by theoretical and empirical studies, the transfer of wealth from parents to children is
by far the largest determinant of household wealth and ability. Similarly, when mahr is determined
by a value that may appreciate over time (e.g. gold and property), it secures a woman in the event
of the death or divorce by her husband. It also gives her a power to make important life decisions
for herself and children. With financial empowerment, other inter-dependent rights like the right to
housing, education, adequate health care, and access to justice is immediately impacted on.
